Collage Workshop

With Contemporary Oaxaca Artist Humberto Batista

Besides having villages that specialize in traditional crafts, Oaxaca’s capital city (officially named Oaxaca de Juarez) is one of the most important centers of contemporary fine art in Mexico.

Mujer y Piñas - Humberto Batista

Our collage workshop leader, Humberto Batista, came to Oaxaca from Mexico City to pursue his career in the fine arts. In his studio just off the
z
ócolo, Humberto creates paintings, collages, and assemblages which are sold throughout Mexico, the United States, and Europe.

In this workshop, students create compositions with unusual found objects and imagery.

Humberto often works along side the students in his wonderful studio filled with an eclectic mix of natural and hand made artifacts.

In an atmosphere that is relaxed and supportive, Humberto encourages collage-makers to explore personal response to Mexican visual culture.

student collages

Humberto provides a wide range of collage materials, from red chili peppers to art work from old books and magazines. Students also bring objects and images along with them to add to their collages.  And wonderful array of curiosities can be found in the local markets.

After the workshop, Humberto will leads a gallery tour through beautiful Oaxaca to see the best of contemporary Oaxacan art.
